(Καθώς το μυθιστόρημα είναι γραμμένο στα αγγλικά, εκτός από τον ελληνικό, ακολουθεί και αγγλικός σχολιασμός.)

Αυτό είναι  ένα μυθιστόρημα υπερφυσικού και ταυτόχρονα ψυχολογικού τρόμου. Το υπερφυσικό στοιχείο της υπόθεσης βασίζεται στο τοπίο (σαν δαιμόνιο του τόπου ή αλλιώς genius loci, όπως είναι γνωστό στα λατινικά). Στην ουσία, το υπερφυσικό στοιχείο απεικονίζει το δέος απέναντι στη φύση, στοιχείο που οι περισσότεροι άνθρωποι το έχουν νιώσει κάποια στιγμή, οπότε αυτό διευκολύνει την  ταύτιση του αναγνώστη. Το ψυχολογικό τμήμα του έργου αφορά τα προβλήματα και τα κόμπλεξ της πρωταγωνίστριας, δηλαδή τάσεις αυτοκαταστροφής, αυτοϋποτίμηση, επιθυμία απελευθέρωσης, εύρεση της αληθινής αγάπης, επίδραση τοξικών σχέσεων του παρελθόντος και τραυματικών εμπειριών.

Το μυθιστόρημα έχει μάλλον πολύπλοκή δομή. Υπάρχουν τρία επίπεδα αφήγησης. Αρχικά, ο αναγνώστης εισάγεται στην πλοκή μέσω της αφήγησης της υποτιθέμενης εκδότριας του χειρογράφου στο οποίο κατέγραψε τις εμπειρίες της η πρωταγωνίστρια. Το κύριο σώμα  και δεύτερο επίπεδο της αφήγησης αποτελείται από το εν λόγω ημερολόγιο της πρωταγωνίστριας και αφηγήτριας. Τέλος, το τρίτο στρώμα αφήγησης, ενσωματωμένο στην εν λόγω καταγραφή, συνίσταται από αποσπάσματα μιας μελέτης γραμμένης από τον λαογράφο προηγούμενο ένοικο. Εκτός απ’ αυτά, περιέχονται στην πλοκή κι ένα διήγημα, το οποίο αφορά τα ίδια θέματα που ταλανίζουν την πρωταγωνίστρια και ένα απόσπασμα διηγήματος ως επίλογος.

Η συγγραφέας χρησιμοποιεί το μοτίβο του αναξιόπιστου αφηγητή και το αναλύει κιόλας, μέσω της επίσης συγγραφέως αφηγήτριάς της. Υποθέτω ότι το κλειδί για την κατανόηση των περιγραφόμενων είναι το τμήμα διηγήματος που χρησιμοποιείται ως επίλογος. Αυτό το απόσπασμα μιλάει κυρίως για τη μαγεία της αφήγησης, ακόμη κι όταν αυτή αφορά σκοτεινά και αρνητικά θέματα. Ειδικότερα, θίγει το θέμα της σημασίας, κι ίσως και των συνεπειών, της μορφοποίησης των αρνητικών συναισθημάτων και των τραυματικών εμπειριών μέσω της λογοτεχνικής καταγραφής τους. Τα ίδια θέματα κυριαρχούν σε όλο το βιβλίο, δηλαδή της γραφής σαν κάτι εθιστικό, σαν αρρώστια και σωτηρία ταυτόχρονα.

Η γλώσσα είναι κοφτή και σύγχρονη, με αρκετές λέξεις και εκφράσεις της αμερικάνικης αργκό. Αυτές οι διαλεκτικές φράσεις όμως νομίζω ότι δεν δυσκολεύουν ιδιαίτερα την κατανόηση κάποιον γνώστη της αγγλικής, καθώς βοηθούν τα συμφραζόμενα.

Στο μυθιστόρημα υπάρχουν  πλήθος αναφορών σε λογοτεχνικά και κινηματογραφικά έργα, μουσική, ζωγραφική και φωτογραφία. Οι λογοτεχνικές αναφορές ποικίλλουν από παιδική λογοτεχνία μέχρι μοντερνισμό και από λογοτεχνία τρόμου και φαντασίας ως κλασσική λογοτεχνία και θέατρο. Αναφορές υπάρχουν και σε έργα που δεν είναι μυθοπλασία, αλλά αφορούν παραψυχολογία/παράξενα φαινόμενα και λαογραφία. Οι αναφορές πάντως δεν περιλαμβάνουν μόνο πραγματικά βιβλία αλλά και ένα-δύο φανταστικά, κρυμμένα ανάμεσα στα πραγματικά. Σημαντικές είναι και οι αναφορές στα πιο σκοτεινά επεισόδια της ελληνικής μυθολογίας. Τέλος, συναντώνται και αναφορές σε παιδικά τραγούδια και παιχνίδια, παιδικό φολκλόρ, όπως λέγεται.

Λόγω της χρήσης του μοτίβου του αναξιόπιστου αφηγητή και για να θολώσει περαιτέρω το όριο μεταξύ πραγματικότητας και φαντασίας ώστε να γίνει πιστευτό το απίθανο από τον αναγνώστη στο πλαίσιο της πλοκής, χρησιμοποιούνται τεχνικές αληθοφάνειας, καθώς όλα τα τοπωνύμια και τα περισσότερα φολκλορικά βιβλία που αναφέρονται στη διήγηση είναι αληθινά. Επίσης, για τον ίδιο λόγο, στη σελίδα του τίτλου αναφέρονται ως δήθεν συγγραφείς τα δυο πρόσωπα της πλοκής που υποτίθεται κατέγραψαν τις εμπειρίες τους σχετικά με το κόκκινο δέντρο του τίτλου.

Υπάρχουν αρκετά αυτοβιογραφικά της συγγραφέως στοιχεία. Αυτοβιογραφικά στοιχεία είναι οι γνώσεις γεωλογίας και παλαιοντολογίας τις οποίες έχει η πρωταγωνίστρια, πράγμα λογικό, καθώς και η ίδια η συγγραφέας είχε σπουδάσει παλαιοντολόγος. Αυτοβιογραφικό στοιχείο είναι επίσης η διαφορετικότητα της πρωταγωνίστριας.

Ωραίες ατμοσφαιρικές περιγραφές, οι οποίες δεν γίνονται κουραστικές. Οι περιγραφές δεν αφορούν αποκλειστικά το δέντρο του τίτλου και το γύρω δασικό τοπίο, αλλά και τη θάλασσα.

Το βιβλίο έχει μερικές ερωτικές σκηνές, αλλά είναι δοσμένες με απλότητα και φυσικότητα. Αυτές οι σκηνές βρίσκονται εκεί όπου είναι απαραίτητες. Για αυτούς τους λόγους θεωρώ απίθανο να σοκάρουν. Επίσης, είναι λογικό να υπάρχουν, καθώς μεγάλο μέρος του ψυχολογικού φορτίου της πρωταγωνίστριας προέρχεται από τραύματα σχετικά με την ερωτική της ζωή.

Θα επιθυμούσα να υπάρχει κι ένα σχεδιάγραμμα σχετικά με τον προσανατολισμό της φάρμας η οποία αποτελεί το σκηνικό της ιστορίας και του «στοιχειωμένου» επώνυμου δέντρου ως προς αυτήν.  Αυτό πιθανόν να διευκόλυνε την κατανόηση, καθώς έχει μεγάλη σημασία για την πλοκή η σχετική θέση αυτών των δύο τοποθεσιών και μπορεί να είναι δύσκολο να κατανοηθεί μόνο με τα λόγια. Ίσως όμως να αποτελούσε μειονέκτημα η ύπαρξη σχεδιαγράμματος για κάποιους αναγνώστες, μειώνοντας το μυστήριο και άρα και την ατμόσφαιρα.

Γενικά, το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο είναι ένα εξαιρετικό δείγμα ατμοσφαιρικού και ψυχολογικού τρόμου, το οποίο συστήνεται σε όλους τους φίλους του είδους.

English Review

This is a supernatural horror novel but it has also many elements of psychological horror at the same time. The supernatural elements of the story are based on the landscape, as demonstrated by the folklore of the genius loci. The supernatural aspect of the plot represents the awe of nature, an emotion that all the people have felt at some point. The prevalence of this sentiment makes easier the association of the reader with the heroes of the novel. The psychological part of this work is relevant to the main heroine’s problems and complex, namely a tendency for self-destruction, self-depreciation, a want for emancipation, the pursuit of real love, and the impact of toxic past love affairs and painful experiences.

This novel has a quite complex structure. There are three narrative levels. At first, the reader is led into the storyline through the narration of the alleged publisher of the manuscript into which the experiences of the protagonist have been recorded. The main body and second narrative level consist of the said protagonist’s and narrator’s diary. Finally, the third narrative level, incorporated into the already mentioned recording, is comprised of extracts from research written by the previous tenant of the house where the story takes place, which was a folklorist. Besides, the plot includes a short story, which refers to the same problems that torment the main heroine. As an epilogue, there is also a snippet from another short story.

The author uses the trope of the unreliable narrator and she analyses it via the narrator, which is an author, as well. I assume that the key to understanding the plot is the snippet used as an epilogue. This extract discusses the fascination of storytelling, even when this narration relates to dark and negative themes. In particular, it broaches the subject of the importance and the consequences of shaping of the negative emotions and the traumatic events via their literary recording. The same topics dominate the whole book, namely the writing as something addictive, as a disease, and as salvation simultaneously.

The language is sharp and modern with several words and expressions from American slang. Nevertheless, I think that someone familiar with the English language would not have difficulty with the text, as the context helps.

In this novel, there are many references to literature and cinema, music, painting, and photography. The literary references range from children’s literature to modernism and from fantasy and horror to classic literature and theater.  In addition, there are allusions to parapsychology/strange phenomena literature and folklore. Some of them are imaginary books, hidden among the real. Furthermore, an important nod to the darkest events of Greek mythology occurs inside the text. Finally, children’s games and songs, namely children’s folklore, are mentioned.

The author uses techniques of verisimilitude because of the utilization of the motif of the unreliable narrator and for succeeding in the reader’s suspension of disbelief. Specifically, all the toponyms and the more folkloric books which are mentioned are real. Furthermore, on the title page, the persons who chronicled the plot are recorded as authors for the same reason.

There is a considerable amount of the author’s autobiographical traits. Autobiographical hints are the heroine’s knowledge of geology and paleontology since the author had studied these domains of science. Another autobiographical aspect is the heroine’s sexual difference.

There are beautiful atmospheric descriptions of the scenery, which at no time are tedious.  These descriptions don’t refer only to the title’s tree but also to the sea.

The plot includes some erotic scenes, but they are presented simply and naturally. These instances are situated in moments that are needed for the evolution of the narrative. That is why I hold the opinion that these scenes aren’t possible to shock the reader. Furthermore, there is a logic behind their presence, considering that a great deal of the protagonist’s psychological burden originates from traumas regarding her love life.

I would desire a map or sketch concerning the orientation of the farm which is the setting for the story and of the “haunted” eponymous tree.  This probably would make easier the understating of the plot, since it is a significant element of the storyline and maybe it is difficult to explain with words only. Nevertheless, it is also possible that for some readers the existence of a map or sketch could be a disadvantage, reducing the mystery and thus the ambiance of the story.

Generally, this novel is an excellent specimen of atmospheric and psychological horror, recommended for all the people who love the genre.
